Race (the vanishing "white")

Race is a form of personal identity. Most bureaucratic establishments use race as a way to break people up in to segments along with gender. This tends to lead to bias opinions about one group. One bias opinion I feel the book states is that “whites” are still privileged in this day and age. I would say in the past this was very true that having white skin or being identified as a white person allow that individual to have certain doors opened for them. However things have changed rightful so since the civil rights movement happened. Unfortunately the pendulum has swung all the way to the opposite side instead of settling in the middle. An example of this is college scholarships. There are little to none (college scholarships) available to students who check “white” as their race on an application. This is why I think the Census Bureau along with other government entities should allow people to check multiple races for themselves. My skin color may look “white” having blond hair and green eyes but I am also Cherokee Indian.
Thanks,
Katrina

  1. Hi Katrina,

You make some really good points in your post. Although being white meant having privileges at one time, it has definitely flipped over the years. White people have become the minority in many areas of California, and I have to say in most of my classes I am out numbered to other races. This is not a problem with me what so ever, but it proves that the races are mixing and immigration increased drastically over the last 5-10 years to the US. I also find it really unfortunate that although other races may still be classified as a "minority" it doesn't mean that they are any less fortunate than a white person, and scholarships should be equal for all. I agree that the Census should allow for you to put multiple races on the paper, because in reality no one is technically one pure race, we all come from a long history of immigrants from other countries.

  2. Dear Katrina,

I also agree with your thoughts about the biased opinion the book gave about white people having it all when in reality, not all of you do. Everyone is considered different, and we all grow up in different cultural backgrounds and economic class. They should not only give scholarships to the Minority because the definition of the Minority has changed. For example, my friend Brandon is Chinese-American, and he lives the rich life in a safe and expensive neighborhood, and he also gets scholarships because he was qualified for the scholarships for Minorities. Since the economic recession, I think our country needs to see that there needs to be a balance like you said about equality for no matter who it is, so that we can all help one another in this country where we are supposed to be one audience instead of competing to be better than the whites all the time.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It really made me think about things like you see in this comment.. :)
